B J. Geo Jute Felt as Growing Medium, Substitution of Soil.

Introduction:  Jute felt/ jute germination pad is manufactured by following the needle punched method.  Fibers are only accepted after the quality test. Jute germination becomes very familiar in the vertical farming industry because it has the same capacity as soil has.  Jute fibers can be consumed directly that’s the safest side of this germination pad.

Why Jute Felt as Growing Medium:  There are various types of growing mediums like jute & they are –

  • Vermiculite
  • Rockwool
  • Clay pellets
  • Perlite or peat moss
  • Coir mat
  • Hemp mat

But jute is safe & can be eaten, in eastern region jute leaves are eaten as green veggies. Jute fiber consist more minerals & nutrition than other growing mediums.  It has Iron, Potassium, Crude protein, Beta Carotene & many more.  Jute felt is perfect for micro seeding because it produces humic acid which is a molecule that helps plant root absorb water and nutrients which result in higher yields.

How to Grow Microgreens on Jute Microgreen Pads:
Growing microgreens on jute microgreen pads as a fast, easy & clean way to grow kitchen crop.  Jute microgreen pads are 100% organic and natural. Jute mats are thick felt like fabric providing a nice cozy damp environment for fast seed germination. They hold water nicely & drain as well so they never soggy.

  1. Wet the jute mat thoroughly to start. The dry jute seed pad may resist water at first. Using warm water & spraying it thoroughly & soaking it for a few minutes before placing in tray is recommended.
  2. Rinse the seed pad well before sowing.
  3. Sow your microgreen seeds as evenly as possible across the damp jute pads
  4. Cover the trays & place in a dark space
  5. Bring them back into the light at the third or fourth day. Once the microgreens are starting to stand up, needs to stop watering & keep water in the lower tray.

Conclusion:
Growing microgreens on jute fiber grow mats is a very clean way to grow. Growers don’t need to worry with messy soils, don’t need to apply pesticides & don’t have to worry about soil splashing up on the microgreens on water. One of the best sides is due to increasing in population, people are occupying more lands so the demand of fresh food increasing but to meet this crisis people can move to vertical farming & can grow their own food.
